FROM THE RUINS OF NEW ARCHIPELAGO
Had the opportunity to create & design the key visuals & assets for one of Nusantara Fashion Festival 2020 video production which features the fashion garments of Deden Siswanto @densiswanto x Straps. Under the supervision & direction of @maikacollective, the direction took influences of the stillness & depth of Ukiyo-e art and also Nusantara's silhouettes.
In the fits of Deden Siswanto’s work lies a multifaceted stories about the Archipelago’s rich visual vocabularies. It uses a lot of imageries found in not only Indonesia, but other Southeast Asian & Eastern Asian countries. The aesthetics and visual motifs of layered garments, the sharp cuts & the loose fit, also the use of dark colors (black/navy) signifies the influence of science fiction, bleakly futuristic aesthetic that blends seamlessly with the tonality of Nusantara’s traditional imageries. The materiality of the visuals are inspired from brutalist properties in Buddhist & Hindu temples in Indonesia as well as the presented fits themselves, the idea is to replicate the layered garments using the stones and architectural properties designed.
