The main concept of statements and graphics of this work is taken from one of the concepts in the book Anti-Oedipus: Capitalism & Schizophrenia by Gilles Deleuze & Felix Guattari. “Body without Organs” or corps sans organes is a concept that describes a deeper reality than a well-formed whole — by fully functioning parts. At the same time it also describes a person's relationship with his body literally. In this book, this concept is explored in depth — both literally and with a particular perspective of reality in a variety of ways.
This work compares and replaces the concept of Body without Organs (body without organs) with Bali without Organs (Bali without Organs). The suitability in terms of wordplay and conceptually is represented and communicated — from the context of Balinese cultural and social issues. Bali is now defined by the organs of capitalism, the organs that function fully to realize the image of Bali as a body that is nothing more than a commodity. The concept of Bali Without Organs has a provocative power which at first will feel ambiguous and unreasonable, but will be revealed and can attract the audience of this graphic work to think more deeply about Bali's potential as the real body.
MAIN GRAPHIC
SCREENPRINTED SHIRT
The results of the graphic design use typography and symbols that are identical to Bali culture. On the back is a symbol inspired by the vanilla plant, abstracted to match the style. The words Without & Without are superimposed, binding each other to describe the bilingual nature in Bali — where English signs are often seen and many foreign tourists have settled and are synonymous with Bali. There are two versions, the first with 'Without' and the second with a white background with 'Without'. The symbols are taken from Balinese script symbols which are Balinese punctuation marks as binding elements. Then there are also symbols such as eggs which analogize Bali as an egg (body).
INVERTED POSTER
SUPPORTING INSTALLATION
This poster is an inverted version of the main graphic work, where the words 'Without' appear in the same position instead of 'Without' — even though they exist and collide with each other. This design is an intention as a variant of the design and stimulates different perspectives from different languages. In the word 'Organ' there is also a rank (s) as a multiple organ signifier — plural. The bracket can be filled according to the interpretation of the audience.
FOREIGNERS POSTER
SCREENPRINTED SHIRT
The poster and the whole work are inspired by the figure of Igor Tamerlan as an independent creative figure. In his often underrated & forgotten works, he criticizes the current situation of Bali from a contemporary social and cultural context. One of the lyrics of the song entitled 'Bali Vanili' can be interpreted as an attitude towards foreign tourists and consumerism in contemporary Bali.
TRAFFIC POSTER
SUPPORTING INSTALLATION
This poster is a source of inspiration as well as being inspired by traffic jams in Bali. Street organs in any form limit Bali from fulfilling its potential — because it serves to meet the needs of people outside Bali. So that the gap becomes a shared reflection.
DEVELOPMENT POSTER
SUPPORTING INSTALLATION
The development and existence of five-star resorts as organs in Bali became the inspiration for this work. Will all the lands in Bali be defined by these resorts? Where is the beautiful nature of Bali?
CONCESSION POSTER
SUPPORTING INSTALLATION
Balinese concessions and signages are also the organs that inspire this work. What are these organs that define Bali in this contemporary era? Or could Bali be more than we know today?
