In mid-2020’s we pitched a design concept for the visual identity for the upcoming (2020) national film festival of Indonesia, FFI (Festival Film Indonesia) — which is the highest award event for the film industry in Indonesia. FFI was first held in 1955 and continued in 1960 and 1967 (under the name National Film Appreciation Week), before finally starting to be held regularly in 1973.
Working closely with the comittee & the Ministry of Culture we set out to create a visual identity that celebrates the history of Indonesian cinema & garnering appeal from younger audience. The pitch was approved and Maika Collective Studio was appointed as its creative consultant for this year’s set of events from the Pre-Event (Film Festival) to the Awarding Night (Malam Citra); working on its creative direction & overall visual outputs.
PRE-EVENT (FILM FESTIVAL)
The first part of the series of event; it is the preliminary event of film curation before proceeding to the awarding ceremony that will be held in the end of the year. The visual identity is inspired by the elegance of the 35mm film prints; as shown in the logogram & logotype. This logotype & official typography is based off Voyage by VJ Type. This year’s ceremony is very much about celebrating the elegance and prestige of the event.
The visual direction for the visuals for social media (priority communication) was inspired by the 35mm film prints, we tried to keep the spirit of the film as superficial & obvious as possible. The key is to bring a new, fresh spirit in the identity of FFI in 2020; juxtapositioning RGB colors (burst of lights from a projector) into one of the most archaic & formal forms of traditional cinema. The elegant typography, from its layouting and positioning reimagines the prestige and elegance of this famous annual event.

MALAM ANUGERAH PIALA CITRA (AWARDING NIGHT)
The awarding night is continuing the creative direction established from the pre-events; strengthening the elegance & allure of the function. We were tasked with a specific output in creating the programme book; an object of interaction with the attendees of the awarding night. The book represents the spirit of this year’s festival spirit; utilizing inventive design & complimenting the story of the nominated film & crew; creating memorable imageries of the most celebrated films in Indonesia that year.
