In early 2021; Band of Illustrations & Suneater approached me to create an artwork for .Feast that included several other illustrators/artists/designers as well for SunDongYang (Suneater’s apparel brand) Capsule Collection for the Eid Mubarak season in Mid-2021. We were both tasked to choose a song from .Feast’s discography to work with — one that can represent the spirit of Eid Mubarak.
The composition of this work consists of typography & illustration units which are interpretations of the song .Feast from 2017 entitled 'Jerusalem'. In the context of this collection 'Jerusalem' has a unique interpretation. Jerusalem is here defined as a house without borders; a location has a wealth of meaning and significance that are intertwined by Abrahamic beliefs. This interpretation is an attempt to portray Eid in Indonesia as a communal celebration; with his joy & influence that sees no difference.
As someone who grew up Catholic in Indonesia; Eid is a celebration that I also celebrate myself. 'Jerusalem' becomes a significant song for myself because my interpretation is that; we who have different beliefs, in the end also return to the same house (Jerusalem). Neither from our goal, nor from 'the very notion of just coming home' somehow becomes integral to our reality. The intersection of my cultural background and the place where I live is a unique amalgamation of life experiences and should be celebrated. 'Tear down this border, we share the same mother'. A line from the song that became very significant for me.
SHIRT
Through typography; which is an abstraction of the silhouette of the Arabic letters; with a romantic & gothic gesture. In this Eid celebration; the theme of 'going home', 'returning' to family and partners — a period of forgiveness & forgiveness is the main thing — especially in Indonesia. Through illustration there is an attempt to give the impression that sometimes there are visible boundaries that we create; because of our misunderstandings & imperfections as human beings. This is illustrated by the negative spaces in the illustrative composition created by the earthly elements of Middle Eastern architecture — which sometimes get in the way, but we can actually overcome.
